Color Moiré Suppression

Moiré is a phenomenon which sometimes can occur in digital images and in different forms, e.g. as wrong color renditions or as image details distortions.

With a Phase One digital camera back there are at least 3 different ways to handle Moiré:

  • Avoid Moiré during shooting
  • Moiré suppression tool in Capture One PRO (Mac only)
  • Phase One DeMoirize plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® (Mac only)
How to avoid Moiré during shooting
Switch aperture setting. If Moiré is a problem then if possible avoid the aperture range where the lens is most sharp. What aperture you use plays a large roll if Moiré appears or even how much it appears.
The examples on the right 4 different shots of a piece of fabric perfectly focused but shot at different apertures:

Change angle and distance to the object. If you realize that you have Moiré in you picture change the camera position or angle slightly. Just a few centimeters can have a dramatic effect.

Try and handhold the camera when using daylight or other constant light. The small vibrations in a camera body can help eliminate Moiré.

Remove Moiré with new Moiré Suppression Tool in Capture One (Mac only)
A Moiré tool is available in Capture One PRO and DB versions on the Mac platform. With this new tool you can effectively suppress and remove color Moiré in images from the range of Phase One digital backs listed here:

P 45 / P 30 / P25 / P 21 / P20 / H25 / H20

The new Moiré Suppression Tool is easy to use and gives you a number of advantages in your efforts to suppress Moiré:
  • Removes color Moiré directly when processing the RAW files
  • Moiré removal settings can be used across multiple RAW files
  • Auto masking ensures that the Moiré Suppression Tool only works in areas with high risk of having Moiré
  • Moiré mask can be clearly visualized and easily adjusted
  • The effect of Moiré Suppression Tool can be inspected in the Focus tool

In the example to the right Moiré is eliminated to varying degree in a shirt, simply by changing one parameter in the new Moiré tool.

Eliminate Moiré with Phase One DeMoirize plug-in in Photoshop
Another strong option to help you eliminate Moiré is to use the DeMoirize plug-in for Adobe Photoshop.

The tool gives you the opportunity to eliminate Moiré in TIFF files from within Adobe Photoshop.

With the DeMoirize plug-in you can create your own selection in an image, indicating where you want to have moiré eliminated. There are a number of options available to help you eliminate Moiré fast and effectively, e.g. in images of textiles and skin and hair.
