   LENS CAST CALIBRATION WORKFLOW
LENS CAST CALIBRATION WORKFLOW
For H 20, H 25 and P series Phase One digital backs.

By Walter Borchenko, Knowledge Integrated Inc.

Lens casts typically occurs when working with camera backs on large format cameras and with wide angle capture. In Capture One PRO it is easy to compensate for lens cast by doing a lens cast calibration, LCC. These calibrations can be pre-made, moved from computer to computer and applied directly when shooting tethered.

LCC calibrations are now available to all sessions. In addition, when moving files from computer to computer, LCC files are carried forward and the workflow is retained. For wide angle capture, the LCC calibration also corrects some of the light fall-off from center to edge, removing the requirement to use a center gray filter in most cases.

Moving LCC files from computer to computer
Move a capture collection including all subfolders to another workstation. On the new
workstation open the Capture One application and select the new collection. Wait until the collection has loaded and all the thumb nail images are available. Close and reopen the Capture One application. The first time the application is introduced to the session, it will not show the LCC files but the application will recognize the LCC calibration files from the settings folder and copy the LCC files to “User” /Library/ Application Support/ Phase One/Chroma Calibration folder. The second time the application is launched, capture files will be shown using the right LCC files and the LCC calibrations will be available for all sessions.

Pre making LCC calibrations
Now that LCC files are available for all sessions, pre making LCC calibrations makes sense and saves time. Pre Making LCC files for lenses needing LCC calibration is only required once. The LCC is more concerning the actual characteristics of the optics not the light conditions that the optics are used in. This phenomenon introduces a whole new approach to LCC calibration. If you are using a Cambo Wide DS camera with a wide lens like the 24mm, there are pre marked shift settings that can be used as a reference to the most common shift settings. By pre making the LCC calibrations before shooting for your most common Shift positions, no LCC is required during the shoot.

Apply LCC files automatically when shooting tethered
LCC calibrations can be automatically applied if your camera defaults are set to “Enherrit from last capture”. Apply an LCC calibration. Next, select the last image and apply the LCC style. In the Capture tool select “Enherrit from last capture” for the setting. Each image that is now captured to this folder will automatically have this LCC profile applied.
