Lots new for 2008

We close 2007 on an extremely positive note with the release of Capture One 4 and a new Phase One camera in early 2008. Phase One digital backs are the global leader in the rental market and with top photographers from almost every category. In this issue we explore the creative edge and how we can all think differently about photography through the experience of photographer Perry Thompson.

Capture One 4 final release!

Capture One 4, the next generation of the world's first RAW workflow software is here! New Phase One advancements further increase quality while adding lots of new features.

Capture One 4 is the next generation of Capture One LE (Limited Editon) with some very important additons. Capture One 4 supports all Phase One backs as well as virtually all DSLRs and includes unlimited batch processing, both unavailable with Capture One LE. These changes will allow Phase One back users to take advantage of the quality and new workflow tools now, since the Pro version of Capture One 4 is expected to be launched in 2008.

The new software release is available to all registered owners of Capture One LE as a free upgrade. As well, all registered owners of Capture One Pro will get a free license for Capture One 4. New licenses can be purchased from the Phase One e-Shop for 129 USD or 99 EUR.

Some of the new features include:

  • Cross platform license for Mac and PC
  • High dynamic range for easy recovery of highlight and shadow details
  • Variants allowing for multiple versions of the same RAW file, viewable together without storage overhead
  • Web contact sheets for fast image sharing with clients
  • View up to 12 images simultaneously at full resolution

  • Significant improvements in workflow speed through shortcuts and simplified tools

The culture of openness

This year many milestones were achieved both by the Phase One team and the photographic industry. The following comment by Ed Lee, a director at InfoTrends, suggests great progress towards quality and craftsmanship today. ¨Our recent survey of professional photographers shows that pros have fully adopted digital and RAW format with 89% of all images being captured digitally and over 50% of them in RAW format.¨

As we see more and more photographers using RAW, we also see more use of Capture One and more interest in the Phase One digital backs. This year many photographers have switched to Phase One backs in market segments that are dominated by DSLR users. I think much of it comes from  photographers claiming 50%, 80% and even 90% reduction in post production. This really changes how competitive you can be. This is also a very positive sign and a great way to end this year. I look forward to the many new milestones we will be able to achieve in 2008!
