Rentals, Rent houses and Digital Assistants

Digital capture has changed the workflow of photography. Rarely does everyone have all of the equipment or services for a particular job. In our age of specialization, adding the right services and equipment at the right time really builds profit. To help nurture the community and more understanding within our community, I am focusing this issue on rentals and digital services.

Understanding the rental community

The culture of openness

The sharing of business concepts and ideas is an uncommon practice in photography yet we need this now more than ever! The capital cycle is very important to the photo business model. A capital cycle is roughly the amount of money you need to cover the costs of your business for the average time jobs starts to the point they pay out. What’s remains is profit.

Phase One backs are designed to last long and provide a great ROI (return on investment.). Many backs from 1998/99 are still operating today with the latest software. This unheard of lifespan helps the capital cycle but it’s not enough!

Photo business has changed requiring photographers to double or triple in size for specific jobs or use specialized equipment. Rentals and digital assistants become critical to the capital cycle and profit. Also, too many use the wrong equipment for jobs because they don’t own what they need. Rentals really help here. If you lose a client because of quality and you are in a smaller market, the client brings in outsiders at an enormous increase in cost. Charge the client for the rental and explain why it’s necessary for quality and doing the job right. Budgets aside, clients appreciate and understanding that it‘s cheaper than bringing in an outsider. The whole business of rentals can really help build the bottom line. Please email comments to me at  jst@phaseone.com.
