Going beyond the DSLR!

Sometimes, we are so focused on work that we forget to look at the tools we use to do our work. This issues offers some first reactions to the P+ from Errol Higgins based in LA and Walter Borchenko from his trip to Australia. We also have a thought provoking interview with Neil Latham, a recent DSLR convert to the Phase One P 21. Neil has reduced his Photoshop™ time to almost nothing. A significant accomplishment!

P+ digital backs create new opportunity!

Getting Satisfaction
an Interview with Errol Higgins by Walter Borchenko

I first heard of Irvine, California based Errol Higgins during our road show In 2006. Errol is both a proud owner and a real believer in both passion and profit.

Errol has taken delivery of a P 45+ and shares some of his first impressions of the P+ here.

P 25+: Location shooting in Australia
by Walter Borchenko

Walter wears many hats including PHASEplus producer and editor, author of Capture One Applied Craftsmanship, evangelist for better digital photography, and photographer. In July, Walter took advantage of his trip to Australia to get a first-hand experience with the new P 25+ back. Putting the P 25+ through its paces included a series of tests to investigate both low and high ISO in daylight and night shooting.

Two days of shooting created some interesting results. Choose the Image Gallery link and select the image Gallery tab to see some early selects or read the review with tests results and conclusions here.

Converting to a P 21 from a DSLR
by Neil Latham and Walter Borchenko

Neil has offered us one of the most unusual glimpses into the conversion porcess to a back from a DSLR that we have documented to date. Neil first gave us an interview after taking the Applied Craftsmanship class in Seattle, Washington back in May. The results from the P 21 combined with the new workflow techniques inspired Neil to write to us of his experiences about a month later. Two months after taking the class Walter Borchenko interviewed Neil for a PHASEplus article that has evolved into a lot more! See some of Neil’s terrific images and read about all of these experiences in the full PDF or choose one of the following for each separate article. Applied Craftsmanship class interview by Walter Borchenko, Real life experiences by Neil Latham, and Quantum leap in efficiency interview by Walter Borchenko.

The culture of openness

Programs that we have implemented to speed up deliveries of the P+ backs are starting to impact our back order situation. We are not near fulfilling all of the back-orders but we have managed to catch up a little bit. Thanks to all who are patiently waiting. I am very pleased to announce that we are able to deliver some P+ backs within 3 to 4 weeks of ordering. Contact your local dealer for details on what's available in this shorter time-frame. The response to the P+ has  been exceptional in many ways with product quality playing a big part. Our efforts to only ship when the products are really ready, has paid off with the lowest level of problems with a new product roll-out in our history. The incredibly high level of sub-component testing and quality control have also been frustrating to everyone since much of our production is affected when sub components fail to meet tests. Quality has been a top prority at Phase One and is an area where we cannot compromise even if it means having back-orders!

This now brings me to the question of Phase One digital backs vs. DSLRs! Although digital backs are not for everyone, using a DSLR in all shooting situations is equally wrong. Today, the new struggle is to separate from the competition in some meaningful way. If you are dedicated to craftsmanship photography where "good enough" is not accepted, take my challenge! Contact one of our dealers and compare the results! The P+ backs have set a new benchmark that is surprising when you experience it!  Please email comments to jst@phaseone.com.
