PODAS Kimberley Cruise - SOLD OUT

Are you ready for the Trip of a Lifetime?

The Kimberley, also known as ‘Paradise on Earth’, is located in beautiful Western Australia, and was one of the earliest settled parts of Australia. Where the sky meets the land, the desert meets the sea, where white sands, red rocks and cobalt blue waters come together, here rests the town of Broome from where your journey will begin.

As with all PODAS adventures we’ll quite literally “hit the ground (and water) running.” Each participant will be shooting this adventure with a state-of-art 60 megapixel Phase One IQ160 camera system. Your images will be rich with more detail and color than you ever thought possible.

It all begins when you board the magnificent True North in the beautiful port of Broome.  You will embark at 1700H (5 pm) – in time for a cocktail with your fellow adventurers before an approximate 1830H (6:30 pm) departure. Dinner is served shortly after leaving port for the overnight cruise to Yampi Sound.

Day One
Awaken early and witness a gorgeous sunrise on majestic Kimberley, and savour an irresistible True North breakfast as we glide past Cockatoo and Koolan Islands. Our attentive crew will be happy to introduce the colorful histories of both islands while helping you capture the best possible images.
Next, it’s time to ‘personally’ introduce you to a Kimberley icon – The Horizontal Falls. Have your cameras ready to experience the awesome power of the region’s huge tidal range in an exhilarating tender ride. Then climb aboard your air-conditioned helicopter for a view of the falls that very few experience! You will have hardly had a chance to catch your breath when, for those who can’t wait one minute longer, you’ll be at Leadline Creek and have the first opportunity to ‘land a barra’! (if you prefer some fishing as break from your photography).  Before you know it, your first day onboard will be coming to an end – but there’s still time to select a fine wine and to enjoy a leisurely evening meal as we cruise to Doubtful Bay and shoot even more exquisite images.

Day Two
This morning is devoted to exploring the Sale River. We will ‘ride the tide’ on a classic river expedition with beautiful images around every bend. Enjoy a swim in your very own billabong (small lake) before returning to the ultimate comfort of the True North. You’ll be enjoying lunch as we weigh anchor and cruise for another Kimberley icon -Montgomery Reef!
Montgomery is a unique eco-system that must be seen to be believed – and see it you will – as 140 square miles of coral reef rises out of the ocean before your astonished eyes! Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls, exposing a privileged view of another world. Turtles, dugong, manta rays and every imaginable sea creature abound, and the helicopter puts all into perspective!  Whether from sea level or from the air, this will be a place to capture some special photographs.
During our downtimes and cruises to different locations we hold classroom lectures on Capture One Pro, and each instructor will present a lecture or two on their own styles of photography.  You’ll find these lectures inspiring --  they will help you see things differently as you explore this vast wilderness.  We will also have time for one-on-one sessions with instructors, including an over all print critique.

Day Three
Early-risers will be treated to a heli-flight with a difference - a champagne sunrise on the top of a mountain! What could be better than shooting a magnificent sunrise with a glass of champagne and a Phase One camera on a tripod?   The astonishing scenery includes so many spots that you won’t want to miss as the True North graces the majestic Prince Regent River. At King’s Cascades we maneuver the True North right under the falls. Then it’s time for more ‘adventure in the tender’ - a chance to stretch the laces on your hiking boots and an opportunity to swim in yet another picture-perfect billabong. The helicopter will be popular again when the first group of intrepid explorers returns from Jurassic Park!  Photo opportunities abound at every one of these stops.

Day Four
If you think the Regent was good, wait until you see the Hunter! With stunning red cliffs set behind rainforest and mangroves, the Hunter River is yet another awesome setting for both photographs and simple exploring! It’s only a short hike to Jackson Falls and even more splendor from the helicopter! Hopefully we’ll have time for a sunset drink on Naturaliste Island while shooting sunset, and then it’s an overnight cruise to Vansittart Bay. Time for some well deserved rest.

Day Five
Today there will be an opportunity to see the “Bradshaws,” possibly the oldest art known to man. The heli-picnic at Eagle Falls is always a ‘big hit,’ the tenders will be busy exploring local beaches and creeks, and we will also visit the site of a bomber that crashed during WWII. Overnight we cruise to Koolama Bay.  Need we say more?  You will want to make sure that your batteries are charged, as this is another day of great photography.

Day Six
Today we meet another mighty Kimberley river – The King George! As soon as the tide is high enough, we’ll cross the sand bars at the mouth to reveal even an more breathtaking river vista. Then our journey upstream will take us to the very ‘jewel in the crown’ - The King George Falls.  You’ll certainly want to be on deck with your cameras for this portion of the cruise. Here we anchor at the base of the Twin Falls and you will find endless places to explore. Climb or take the helicopter, to the top of the falls for a cruise highlight. The images you make here will light up your walls when you’ve returned home. (Although the thought of leaving this magnificence could well inspire mutiny!) Visit Koolama Bay and learn about the bombing of a state-ship during WWII, then take a stroll at Tranquil Bay before we continue to the frontier port of Wyndham.

Day Seven
Your courtesy coach will arrive at approximately 0800H (8 am) to take you to Kununurra.
When it’s over, you will have incredible memories and spectacular images. You will have visited one of the hardest-to-reach areas in the world, a place that only a few humans have visited.  And although the trip will be over, you will enjoy the images and the new friends you’ve made on this PODAS adventure.

PODAS Dolomites, Italy

The Italian Alps: An artistic photo journey into the heart of the Dolomites

The Dolomites in Italy have some of the most spectacular peaks on earth. The region is truly an alpine paradise for the outdoor fanatic and landscape photographer. The striking originality of the Dolomites landscape lies in the contrast between the upper and lower parts of the mountains. Below around 2,000 meters are gentle rolling mountains covered with verdant forests and lush green meadowland scattered with old wooden barns. Enchanting villages complete with picturesque churches either nestle in the nooks and crannies, or perch precariously on the steep hillsides.

The Dolomites feature an incredible variety of diverse landscapes – from lush valleys to towering peaks – that offer breathtaking panoramas at every turn. These beautiful mountains offer endless opportunities for exploration and stunning photography. Throw in amazing light and clouds and you’ll have a computer full of wall worthy images on your return home.

All attendees will be loaned the state-of-the-art Phase One IQ160 camera system (featuring the Phase One DF camera, the 60 megapixel IQ160 digital back and an 80mm LS lens) to shoot with during the workshop. In addition we will have several sets of the full line of Phase One lenses available so you will always have the right lens for the location we visit. As a PODAS workshop attendee, you will have a no-worries trip. We'll pick you up at the airport, provide transportation during the event, a single-occupancy room, the best instructors in the field, all your meals and beverages, a camera bag that is yours to keep, a license for Capture One Pro that is yours to keep, 2-30x40 prints of images you shot during the workshop. The only things you need to bring to this workshop are a sturdy tripod, CF cards and your computer. Everything else is taken care of.

Ken Duncan
Ken Duncan is well known as the pioneer of Limited Edition Photographic Art in Australia. After a visit to New York in the early 1980's, Ken returned home with a dream to have photography widely accepted as an art form in this country. Ken is truly passionate about his craft. Always striving for excellence, he travels extensively throughout the world in search of the stunning panoramic landscapes - or Panographs - for which he is best known. Recognised internationally as a gifted and prolific landscape photographer, Ken still chooses to describe himself as "... an average photographer, with a great God - merely an interpreter of God's creation". The art, he says, is in seeing, capturing and presenting these images to others. And this Ken does with his own unique style and his exceptional ability to capture the very spirit of a place at a given moment in time.

PODAS workshops are well known for accomplishing a lot in just a few days. This workshop will be no different.  Locations shots each day are based on weather and light. The Dolomites have their own unique light and we will take advantage of the light to capture the best light on peaks and mountains as well as the beautiful valleys.  This is a no worries workshop for you.  We will pick you up at the Milan Malpenasa airport and return you to the airport when the workshop is over. Everything in between is covered.

Upon arrival to our workshop hotel you will check in and then we will begin our fun. After an introduction to the agenda, you will be given a Phase One camera IQ 160 system that is yours to keep throughout the workshop. If you are not already familiar in working with a Phase One camera, we will make sure you get proper instructions on how to operate the camera so you are ready for an early morning shoot the following day.

Our itinerary will be flexible as each days shooting locations will be based on weather forecasts and cloud cover to determine the best locations. You can count on early morning sunrises while the light is emerging and sunset shoots until the sun sets behind spectacular mountain peaks.  We will be shooting at these locations, Carezza and Lago di Carezza, Val Alpe di Siusi, Passo Sella, Passo Fedaia, Passo Pordoi, Passo rolle and Val di Funes.

After sunrise shoots we will enjoy a breakfast and move into the classroom for one of many lectures. These lectures will include composition, photographic philosophies of both instructors, processing and post processing as well as basic and advanced lesson in Capture One. We will also have a lecture on “Now That You  Have Got It What Do You Do With It”. We will spend each afternoon until after sunset shooting at some amazing locations. Followed by a dinner and an opportunity to continue conversations on photography and techniques. There will be plenty of time for one on one print critiques as well as towards the end of the workshop a critique of the group’s favorite images. This will provide an amazing learning experience that will surely improve the way you see and shoot.

PODAS workshops have a certain magic that develops over the days we are together. You’ll learn, share, make new friends and have a few good laughs.  We emphasize you’ll have fun and more than anything else you’ll learn some new techniques and return home with some wall worthy images.

Join Hans, the Phase One team members and your fellow photographers for an amazing opportunity of shooting and learning in one of the most beautiful areas of Italy.Register today to be part of an amazing PODAS photo adventure to one of the most extraordinary locations in Europe.
