There are things that the camera can see that the eye almost can’t see, and often when I am photographing things and we are working with conservation, we will see things that you didn’t realize was there.

Cultural heritage photography

Cultural heritage photography is diverse with different needs and challenges. In order to address the comprehensive nature of cultural heritage collections we provide both specialized and tailored solutions aimed at giving the best output with regards to image quality, material safety and workflow.

We provide both modular and configurable solutions for all different kinds of digitization needs as well as complete installations for new systems. We also help optimize individual components of existing solutions. As all our products are modular, it is always possible to renew parts when technology evolves into new areas.

As the need for digitization is rapidly growing, museums, libraries and other institutions with valuable collections are expanding their digitization efforts and rapid capture is necessary. Collections often fall into four distinct categories: Flat reproduction, book reproduction, film scanning and objects/large art.

Flat reproduction

Most cultural heritage collections include documents, manuscripts, photos, musical scores, letters, cards, etc.

Flat reproduction is centered around a reprographic stand and a high quality camera solution with prime optics to capture every detail and color. It is important to have a consistent digitization workflow with uniform quality that is combined with the best possible ergonomic environment for the operator as digitization projects often take place over long periods of time.

Modularity and configurability are key factors and we support the possibility for creating a customized solution by providing the best modular products or by adjusting already existing solutions.

Book reproduction

A large part of cultural heritage photography deals with digitization of rare and sensitive books. Digitization of books often requires special attention to the binding as this can be fragile and affect how the material is treated. Book scanning of rare artifacts should always be done with the highest possible care to ensure the integrity of the material although this can limit the capture and production speed.

On regular reprographic copy stands, the operator has to check and adjust focus as he works his way through a book – this is a slow and inefficient process. The BC100 book capture system provides the best basis for rapid book capture production. It uses a glass plate with a fixed focus and photographs two pages at a time to considerably increase production times while ensuring careful treatment of delicate materials.

Film scanning

Film scanning frequently involves working with historic glass negatives, medium and large format negatives.

Uniform lighting and accurate tonal reproduction is vital to ensure that all color information can be retrieved during processing; this often takes place during the conversion from negative to positive.

This process is often relative as base material for original transparent matter is likely to change. For example, two rolls of film may behave very differently, both in their original base material characteristic and in their chemical development.

The digitization of transparent film on a medium format capture solution is centered around a stable reprographic stand, a camera with a macro lens and some precision-made film holders for different types of material.

Objects and large art

This area of cultural heritage photography covers digitization that typically takes place away from the photographic studio when objects are too large or too fragile to move.

Large scale paintings are usually lit using an even cast of light while three-dimensional items may need to be illuminated with a harder lighting setup to highlight the shape and form of an object. Portable flash, continuous or even natural available lighting are used during these tasks.

Best photographic results are always obtained by utilizing medium format solutions, either based on MF DSLR or technical cameras with tilt/shift movements.

The fastest workflows are achieved using an automatic DSLR system like the Phase One 645DF+ in combination with an IQ digital back. Optimum quality with tilt and shift movements can be attained with a technical camera in combination with an IQ digital back.
