PODAS Banff

Tony Hewitt / Peter Eastway

September 17th- September 25th 2017

Cost: €5,500 / $6,250 USD

Breathtaking iconography of the Canadian Rockies

Banff has long held as a gateway to some of the most beautiful and rugged scenery in the northern Rocky Mountains. High peaks dusted with snow towering into the heavens, crystal clear lakes, and glacial meadows draw you in. Vast blue skies during the day and millions of stars at night. As fall sets in, the aspens start to change color, hinting shades of yellow amongst the sea of green pine trees. This area of the Rocky Mountains was voted as a top place to visit by Lonely Planet, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our journey will take us to untouched locations, iconic and famous photographic areas such as: Vermilion Lakes, Johnston Canyon, Castle Mountain, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake, Natural Bridge, Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, Icefields Parkway, Pyramid Lake, Maligne Lake, and Mount Robson. With any luck, we will see wildlife such as black and grizzly bears, elk, moose, wolves, and deer.

Our PODAS workshop will focus on the best landscape opportunities these northern Rockies have to offer.

Workshop Information

Talented Instructors

Tony Hewitt and Peter Eastway are on loan to us from Australia in order to explore the breathtaking wildlife and landscape of the Canadian Rockies.

What's Included?

Like all PODAS workshops our trip to Banff is all-inclusive. There’s no need to worry about opening your wallet once you arrive, as the workshop fee covers meals, lodging and transportation. Each attendee will be provided their own Phase One XF camera system to use during the workshop and will be provided access to our complete line of lenses, accessories and first hand technical knowledge.

This PODAS is designed to as inspiring as it is adventurous, while still remaining relaxing and informal. Though we’ll be spending a majority of our time in the field to make use of the morning and evening light, there will be inspirational presentations from our instructors, educational Camera and Capture One tutorials from Phase One staff as well as a bit of downtime in the middle of the day to allow you to enjoy the tranquility that the Rocky Mountains has to offer.  We will cover many advanced techniques of the XF Camera System as they pertain to Landscape and Portrait photography.

This workshop emphasizes the proper use of the XF Camera System and the techniques to ensure consistent success... with a bit of room to enjoy a drink under the great Canadian sky. There will be an equal amount of shooting in the field along with technical instruction, as there is in classroom lessons and inspirational presentations. Our PODAS group will be limited to 15 participants to ensure our 3 instructors and 2 staff can provide ample attention to all.

As is standard in PODAS, you’ll receive a complimentary camera bag, Capture One Pro Software License key when you arrive at the workshop and two large format professional prints, delivered to your door shortly after the workshop.

Fee

The cost of this trip is U.S. $6250 per person.

PODAS will cover all expenses once you arrive in Calgary, Canada. The only expense that is not covered by PODAS is alcohol and additional room charges during your stay.

Phase One will provide all lodging, meals and transportation with the group until you return to the airport at the end of the workshop.

What You Need

We do ask that you bring a tripod that can support a Phase One XF Camera System, a laptop that meets the system requirements for Capture One Pro and CF cards. As this workshop will bring us to some cooler high peaks for sunrise and sunset, as well as rather cool mountain locations that may require walking short distances, it is recommended you bring light but warm outer wear as well as appropriate sturdy footwear for the rugged mountain environment. The key here will be layers, so plan on cooler mornings and evenings with temperate midday temperatures. Aside from these, you only need to bring your passion for photography.

If you have any questions please just drop us an email.

Workshop Schedule

The workshop will begin at the Hidden Ridge Resort in Calgary the afternoon of the 17th.  It is suggested that you arrive prior to 3pm on the day of the 17th to adhere to the PODAS schedule.  We will begin the 17th in the early afternoon and continue until the evening of September 25th when we will wrap with a final session of shooting and farewell dinner.

Each day we will have at least one educational lesson both on location and in the classroom at our hotel.  These will include lessons in Capture One Pro software, the XF Camera system, proper photographic technique, advanced tool use and of course several inspirational presentations by Tony Hewitt and Peter Eastway.  We will also have time to edit images, practice editing techniques and perhaps evaluate some images captured during the workshop.

We will start the trip out in Banff with an intro meeting to get everyone oriented and provide a run down of what to expect on the trip. There will be a crew introduction so everyone start to get to know one another a bit. Our many outings and day trips will include sunrise and sunset shoots in the majestic Banff, Jasper and Yoho parks. We’ll visit shooting locations such as Castle Mountain, Johnston Canyon, Vermilion Lakes, Sulphur Mountain and possibly Two Jack Lake during our time in Banff. With a trip up Sulphur Mountain via gondola, and also a cowboy cookout steak fry dinner & horseback ride.

Once we leave Banff, the village of Lake Louise will serve as base for a few days. We’ll not only visit Lake Louise and nearby Moraine Lake, but also utilize our centrally located spot to see nearby places like Yoho National Park with Emerald Lake and Natural Bridge. You can plan on exploring some of the southern highlights of the Icefields Parkway like Bow Lake, Peyto Lake and Mistaya Canyon. Not to worry, there will be some free time mixed in so you can enjoy Lake Louise, rent a canoe, go for a hike or enjoy some relaxation time around town. Here we will mix in some time for editing your photographs.

After Lake Louise, we’ll drive up the Icefields Parkway and head to Jasper. The Icefields Parkway is a gorgeous ride, the entire trip you’re surrounded by peaks, forests, glaciers, lakes, rivers and hopefully wildlife! With a pit stop at the Icefields Glacier Center for a break along the drive. There’s a gift shop, some info on the glaciers, snacks and bathrooms.

Upon reaching Jasper, we will spend our few days in the area exploring the local lakes. There are smaller lakes like Pyramid Lake and Edith Lake that will give us some great photographic opportunities. An optional hike up Maligne Canyon will be available or some down time to rest and relax. At Maligne Lake we will enjoy a lake cruise that visits the scenic Spirit Island. One of the days we’ll also head into British Columbia and visit the tallest peak in the Canadian Rockies – Mount Robson.

When we’ve finished in Jasper we’ll head back down the Icefields Parkway stopping for photo ops, and make our way to Banff for the end of the PODAS. Upon our arrival in Banff you can head to Calgary for a flight out that afternoon, or head to a hotel you’ve booked. We’ll offer a farewell dinner for anyone who chooses to stay in town for the night.
