April 6th - 14th 2017

Cost: €5,250/ $5,800 USD

The beauty and culture of Cuba

Cuba is in a remarkable state of transition, and offers unprecedented photographic opportunities. This will be Phase One’s first PODAS Workshop to Cuba, but for our guide, Camera Voyages, it’s a home away from home. While the Cuban street atmosphere buzzes with music, art and vintage American cars; the early 15th century architecture will make it feel as though you’re traveling through time. Experiencing Cuban culture first-hand will delight you even beyond the photographic opportunities it offers. Our accommodations are with the local people in beautiful casas at great locations. These people will become your friends and favorite subjects.

Our PODAS workshop in Cuba will focus on the Cuban culture, the people’s traditions and their lives, as well as the landscape that has been shaped by more than 500 years of Spanish and Cuban rule. We will photograph the local boxers, have a photo session with Spanish dancers, visit and dine with a local Cuban artist, ride in vintage American cars, and walk streets that were built 500 years ago creating photos of a lifetime. As we walk the streets and bask in the atmosphere, our friends and famous Cuban artists will be with us, opening up many doors to explore. We will travel to Trinidad, one of the oldest cities on the island, soaking in the landscape and stopping at local farms to meet the farmers and see how they live.

About the workshop

Talented Instructors

Bruce Byers and William Vazquez are no strangers to exploring the culture and people of Cuba. Together with local artist Carlos Rene Aguilera, they’ve visited and explored just about every part of the island over the years and yet they still feel as though they’ve only scratched the surface.
They will share with participants the amazing locations, art, music and people, organizing some truly unforgettable events while contributing their years of photographic wisdom to inspire all. Paul Reiffer will also serve as instructor and fellow world adventurer. Paul has traveled around the world capturing people, landscapes and commercial images for many years.

Whether it’s rising early for sunrise over the Malecon, instructing on the finer points of portrait photography with the people and farmers, or helping participants capture the subtle light and grand sky over the sea at sunset, this team never fails to deliver a fantastic experience.

About PODAS Cuba

Like all PODAS workshops our trip to Cuba is all-inclusive.  There’s no need to worry about opening your wallet once you arrive as the workshop fee covers meals, lodging and transportation. Each attendee will be provided their own Phase One XF Camera System to use during the workshop and be provided access to our complete line of lenses, accessories and first hand technical knowledge.

This PODAS is designed to be as inspiring and educational as it is adventurous, while still remaining relaxing and informal. Though we’ll be spending a majority of our time in the field to make use of the morning and evening light, there will be inspirational presentations from our instructors, and educational Camera and Capture One tutorials from Phase One staff as well as a bit of downtime in the middle of the day to allow you to enjoy the tranquility that Cuba has to offer.  We will cover many advanced techniques of the XF Camera System as they pertain to landscape and portrait photography.

This workshop emphasizes the proper use of the XF Camera System and the techniques to ensure consistent success... with a bit of room to enjoy a drink and music at the local bodega. Our PODAS group will be limited to 14 participants to ensure our instructors and staff can provide ample attention to everyone.

As is standard in PODAS, you’ll receive a complimentary camera bag and Capture One Pro Software License when you arrive in Miami prior to the group flying to Cuba. After the workshop we’re also happy to provide you with two large format professional prints, delivered to your door.

The cost of this trip is €5,250 / $5,800USD per person.  PODAS will cover all expenses once you arrive at Miami International Airport (MIA) in Miami, Florida. The only expense not covered by PODAS is alcohol and additional room charges during your stay. If you are an American, there is no US banking so bringing $500 in US cash for extras is always a good idea.

Phase One will pick you up at the airport upon your arrival and provide all lodging, meals and transportation with the group until returning you to the airport at the end of the workshop.

What you need

We do ask that you bring a tripod that can support a Phase One XF Camera System, a laptop that meets the system requirements for Capture One Pro and CF cards.

As this workshop will bring us to a hot Caribbean island, light clothing, a hat, good walking shoes and suntan lotion is a must. There will be a fair amount of walking, as the culture found in the streets is where a lot of the inspiration lies. Aside from that you only need to bring your passion for photography.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to drop us an email.
