"It is part technique and part creative style. It is everything I employ to make seemingly candid moments come to life, even as a still image." Christian Oth

If Christian Oth has a constant muse it is his Phase One XF 100MP System with its two essential and overlapping components; Capture One Pro Software and distinctively, Styles. Viewing Oth’s portfolio it is immediately apparent that he has reached the top of his craft. He captures so much emotion through his photography and his refinement of imagery, combining a very specific take on portraiture photography. He has also managed to preserve his creative integrity and strong narrative vision, utilizing this with Capture One Pro to create his dynamic concepts and exaltation of portraiture.   His work is theatrical, bordering on whimsical and incredibly romantic. Each photograph conjures an image of style and luxury and above all, a feeling of elegance. So much so that his client list includes Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Martha Stewart, The New York Times Magazine, St Regis, Apple Inc., Canon to name a few.

Oth’s photographic tableaux includes advertising, editorial portraiture and fashion.  Parallel to this Oth has created one of the top celebrity wedding photography studios in the world. Employing a team of twelve photographers, each photographer is entirely supported by a dedicated staff of photo editors, designers, retouchers and project managers, who in turn work with the top wedding planners in the market, shooting celebrity weddings. Renowned throughout the world as a high end creative hub for contemporary celebrity wedding photography and established in 2005, the Christian Oth Studio began on Seventh Avenue in Chelsea, as business grew, they relocated to their current location in Flatiron District of New York City in 2011.

From the off, Christian Oth Studio has developed its own signature aesthetic offering refined visual sensibility creating thought-provoking, memorable and dynamic wedding images.  A trailblazer of photography and a Master Craftsman, no less, each one of Oth’s images is instantly recognisable with his distinctive style . “The combination of all the thought, planning, preparation and creativity that goes into each of my shots is immense”, he explains.. “It is part technique and part creative style. It is everything I employ to make seemingly candid moments come to life, even as a still image. I strive to create and capture visual imagery full of raw emotion and intimacy. While doing so, I continually make sure each bride feels comfortable and appears at her best self at all times”.
"Capture One Pro is aimed at the professional photographer, and it is the most functional software I have ever worked with, this is the reason I purchased the Phase One hardware, it sets the bar" Christian Oth

Prior to 2004 Oth shot all of his photographs on film, he then conceded that digital had reached maturity and he switched to shooting digital. It was at this point also that Oth moved away from shooting medium format film and favored the Canon system and lenses. He loved the quality that he gained from the Canon system but desperately wanted to get back into medium format and thus last year he purchased a Phase One XF with 100 megapixel back. Following this investment, he has been able to achieve a completely new look that previously he had found positively unattainable. Oth confessed that although the hardware is expensive, he was motivated to purchase this system because of the software. He went on further to explain “Capture One Pro is aimed at the professional photographer, and it is the most functional software I have ever worked with, this is the reason I purchased the Phase One hardware, it sets the bar”.

As a result of fully embracing Capture One Pro Software Oth enjoys unprecedented commercial success and is particularly passionate about using Styles. “We are shooting thousands of RAW files and each RAW file needs to be color and exposure corrected, we do this is by hand at our studios”. he said. “Using Capture One Pro Software is essential in our business. It is professional grade software as is usual in the pro-photography world. We don’t use pro-sumer stuff such as Lightroom or Instagram-ish filters to make a quick job of it. The photos we produce go into high end magazines frequently, so we are used to delivering the best quality possible”.

"I use Capture One for shooting both tethered and for culling and processing images. I find it to be the most capable program for fine-tuning images and finding looks that I wouldn’t find elsewhere" Christian Oth
Oth has developed his own Style setting and he has named it ‘Fashion Blue’. “It took me a while to tweak it, but now I find myself using it a lot”.  Capture One Pro offers the facility to create hundreds of your own unique Styles that you can incorporate into your workflow whenever you need to.  With the latest update to Capture One Pro

10.1 it is now possible to accelerate production with the new Styles and Presets tool as it has been optimized to make browsing and managing all styles quickly and easily, applying styles and presets to a single image or multiple images with just one click.

A good portrait bears a sense of connection between the subject and the photographer, which in turn translates into a sense of intimacy for the viewer. Oth’s images reflect this no less because when capturing editorial and fashion portraiture he uses Capture One Pro tethered and this creates a seamless connection between the photographer, model, camera and image, helping to ensure the workflow is infinite. It is fast, flexible and reliable and it is crucially imperative to Oth where speed and accuracy is paramount to his workflow.

“I use Capture One for shooting both tethered and for culling and processing images. I find it to be the most capable program for fine-tuning images and finding looks that I wouldn’t find elsewhere”, he said“I work with Capture One for ‘session’ based workflow primarily, that is when I do editorial and commercial shoots. It’s a great solution from start to finish.”.  For our weddings we use Photo Mechanic for culling images and then do the processing within Capture One. We may switch to it completely at some point, however we still need the browsing speed as we have thousands of images”.

Five Workflow Tips from Christian Oth

1/  Use Capture One Pro for Session-based workflow, it is a great solution from start to finish when working on editorial and commercial shots.

2/  Use Capture One Pro as a tethering and post processing tool, it is second to none.

3/  Utilise Capture One Pro to browse multiple images. We use it 100% of the time for this purpose.

4/  Create custom workplaces in Capture One Pro. As each of the tabs have everything in their place, it enables the photographer to find things quickly and is crucially important.

5/  Utilizing Capture One Pro Styles most definitely speeds things up for my workflow. I like to save the settings as a group and often I repeat the same process/settings to these groups. I am currently exploring the option to repeat metadata settings too. My favorite Style is the one that I have created myself that I have called ‘Fashion Blue’, I am using it frequently in my workflow.
