BURTYNSKY:

Extraction / Abstraction

The exhibition is on at Saatchi Gallery in London, UK from Feb 14 – May 6, 2024

This showcase represents the most extensive exhibition ever organized in the distinguished 40-plus-year artistic journey of internationally acclaimed photographer Edward Burtynsky. Throughout his career, Burtynsky has committed himself to documenting the profound impact of human industry on Earth.

Curated by Marc Mayer, the former Director of the National Gallery of Canada and Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the exhibit comprises 94 large-format photographs by Burtynsky, accompanied by 13 high-resolution murals and an immersive augmented reality (AR) experience.

A central highlight of the exhibit is the captivating film presentation titled “In the Wake of Progress” (2022). Introducing a novel aspect known as the “Process Archive,” the exhibition will also illuminate Burtynsky’s evolution through the various technological advancements in photography over recent decades. The display unveils Burtynsky’s lifelong scrutiny of humanity’s intrusion into the natural environment and the ecological repercussions of industrial processes.

I have spent over 40 years bearing witness to how modern civilization has dramatically transformed our planet. At this time, the awareness of these issues presented by my large format images has never felt more urgent. I am grateful to be mounting the largest exhibition of my career at Saatchi Gallery in London, UK and I hope the exhibition experience will continue to provide inflection points for diverse conversations on these issues and move us all to a place of positive action.
