The most iconic Michelin dishes emphasize quality ingredients and hyper-disciplined technique. Often, it is simplicity that spotlights characteristics which separate the good from the great. Visually stunning dishes, combined with extraordinary taste, result in an experience worthy of Michelin standards.
Similarly, the most iconic photographs don’t need to be overcomplicated. The technique elevates the core elements of color, composition, and light, resulting in an image that resonates with the viewer.
Sandro's photographic journey
Sandro Gamba is, first and foremost, a Chef. Discipline and technique are well understood.
With 42 years of dedicated experience in the culinary arts, working under and alongside some of the industry’s best, Sandro arrived at a position of prestige as the Executive Chef of the Ritz-Carlton in Tokyo. For some, that alone may provide a full plate, but for Sandro there has always been the desire to continue pushing, continue learning, and continuing to express.
Like many great chefs, Sandro has a deep appreciation and love for art. While cooking has been his chosen vocation to express his creativity, photography has consistently found a way to serve as an additional outlet for expression. Photography, much like gastronomy, has seemingly endless opportunities to learn, to grow, and to challenge yourself creatively.
You can never stop learning. You can never stop creating. If you do, you’re dead.
While his photography may be classified as Food Photography, understanding the story behind its creation illustrates that it is much, much more. A food photographer may work with a stylist. A Still Life photographer may work with a producer. A Lifestyle photographer may be motivated by a mood or theme… Sandro cares only about faithfully showcasing the art he has created with subtle beauty and respect.
A chef works with their team and suppliers to first create the dish. Through trial and error, meticulous attention to detail, and masterful technique, a dish is created where the taste is rivaled only by the presentation. The dish IS the work of art.
Sandro has taken his love of cooking, and his love of photography, one step further. The two disciplines are combined to present the art to a wider audience. To record the beauty and refinement, in painstaking detail, forever.
While the consumers of Sandro’s photography may not be able to taste the dish itself, they can appreciate the beauty and the labor of love that created it.
Simplicity and quality
The attention to detail in the creation of these dishes, therefore, demands the highest level of image quality when photographing them. While Sandro cannot be classified as a “technical” photographer, like the finest ingredients, he understands quality when he sees it.
The XF IQ4 150MP he uses is accented simply by two Profoto lights, in a simple and straight forward makeshift studio. The simplicity of his studio setup puts emphasis on the execution of the dish rather than the complexity of the photographic technique.
