Meet Morten Bruun-Larsen, VP of Research and Development
At Phase One, our innovation thrives on the talents and dedication of our team. In this edition of “Beyond the Frame: Phase One Stories,” we introduce Morten Bruun-Larsen, Vice President of Research and Development. With over a decade at the company, Morten plays a pivotal role in driving the technology that powers our products. Get to know more about Morten, the R&D team, and the exciting projects shaping the future of Phase One.

Fueling Innovation: A Passion for Creativity
Morten Bruun-Larsen has been part of the Phase One family for 13 years, and his passion for innovation continues to grow. “I keep enjoying the creativity and entrepreneurship this company is grown from,” Morten shares. Leading a team of around 35 highly skilled R&D professionals, Morten emphasizes the collaborative environment that defines Phase One.
“We have built a ‘flat’ organizational culture that gives everyone a voice. Our talented team members contribute directly to the creation of high-value, high-quality solutions for our customers. Even as our product portfolio has expanded, we maintain a focus on efficiency and staying closely connected with our end users. This helps us remain agile and responsive.”
Driving Excellence: A Recent Project in Focus
One of the exciting projects currently underway is transforming Phase One’s production line through increased automation and test coverage. This initiative, which bridges R&D and Operations, aims to enhance product quality and streamline production.
“We have recently implemented a new toolchain for focusing our industrial, fixed-focus cameras. This implies not only a major quality control improvement but also simplifies the QC process while allowing greater flexibility. It’s a big step towards generating richer performance data, which benefits both our customers and future product development. Continuous improvement is essential to staying competitive in high-end photography.”
Global Collaboration: Bridging Distances
Phase One’s R&D department operates mainly out of Copenhagen, with manufacturing based in central Japan. Despite the geographical distance, the teams work seamlessly together.
“There are times when our R&D staff travels to Japan to collaborate on key projects, particularly around new product introductions and quality control activities. However, much of our collaboration happens through frequent online meetings to align on priorities and project progress.”
Beyond the Office: A Passion for DIY
Outside of work, Morten’s creativity extends to his hobbies. “I’m a lifelong DIY enthusiast. I love using power tools, whether for home renovations or more intricate projects. One of my proudest creations is a Fender Stratocaster clone I built years ago. I still enjoy playing it with my band whenever I can.”
Morten’s hands-on approach to both work and personal projects reflects the spirit of innovation that drives Phase One forward.
